A Project Close to Our Hearts: The Street Cats of Almería
At VetBoxOne we don’t just write about animal health – we live it. This is the story of a cat colony in Roquetas de Mar that needs us every single day.
What began about a year ago as a private initiative – taking in injured cats and bottle-feeding orphaned kittens – has since become a true life’s mission.
Since September 2025 we have been caring for a large, permanent cat colony in 04740 Roquetas de Mar, in the province of Almería. Every single day we drive out there to feed the animals and check that all is well. And we mean “every day” literally: through storms, on holidays, and even when personal setbacks push us to our limits – the cats are waiting for us, and we don’t let them down.
Our biggest hurdle: the cycle of reproduction
The donations we collect at our small solidarity stand outside the local supermarket secure the animals’ day-to-day survival – they go directly into cat food and litter.
The real problem on the streets, however, is uncontrolled reproduction. The internationally established TNR method (Trap–Neuter–Return; known in Spain as “CER”) is recognised as a humane way to reduce the suffering of street cats in the long term. There is no comprehensive municipal implementation in our area yet, and public support does not (yet) reach a private initiative that is still getting established.
So the neutering costs are ours to carry – a real financial challenge.
A ray of hope: our cooperating vet
The good news: we have found a local vet who supports our mission and waives a large part of the regular costs for the street cats:
Despite this generous support, we currently lack the funds to start the urgently needed neutering programme: our own income has recently fallen away, and the donations from the stand cover the daily essentials – nothing more.
Turn a life on the streets into a safe life
With €50 you make the neutering of a male cat possible; with €100, the spaying of a female. Every food donation and every smaller contribution also helps directly on site.
If you would like to support the project in Almería directly, please get in touch – or use the donation options on our homepage.

Education and animal welfare go hand in hand
VetBoxOne.com is our knowledge site for animal health. VetBoxOne.org is our hands-on animal aid. The same people stand behind both – supporting our work on one side strengthens the other.
